Protecting the Environment-One Paint Can at a Time
For the last 50 years, every paint company has used a universal tint colorant system, or UTC, for tinting purposes in retail stores. While a UTC provides great performance in latex paints, it does not perform well in deep colors and has been shown to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) where there were previously no VOCs. Although some paints claim to be zero-VOC, conventional zero-VOC paint products that are tinted with a UTC can emit over 120gpl of VOCs. Although no regulations currently exist that ban VOCs in paint, Benjamin Moore scientists decided to attempt to create a zero-VOC waterborne colorant system about five years ago. Five years and millions of dollars later, Benjamin Moore created Aura, Natura, Regal, and Ben environmentally friendly paints.
